Right now the internet is a scary place. We are being inundated with images depicting the effects of the COVID-19 virus, climate change, and crooked politics.

There is a bright spot in our online culture that I want to explore today: Memes. Memes lighten the darkness of situations that we cannot control and give us a much-needed laugh in a time of global crisis.

The word meme was coined in 1976 by biologist Richard Dawkins and it goes way beyond social-media posts. The word meme captures the concept of “cultural transmission” of ideas in general, where customs and ideas spread from brain to brain.

We like to consume media that is relatable to our own lives.

Do you ever wonder where our most beloved memes originated from? I know I do, so I decided to do some research and discover the stories behind a few of our favorite memes.

After all, I think we could all use a break from pondering what the future holds.
