Depressed and bitter, he ended up in a mental asylum in 1865. Less than a fortnight after he was admitted, he was badly beaten by the guards there. He succumbed to gangrene that is alleged to have stemmed from the beating. Our tragic hero died not knowing the effect his work had on this world.
